HVAC & Data Centres
Air distribution in buildings, data centre cooling, comfort and energy efficiency.
In a data centre, cooling is 30–40% of total energy use. A flaw in air distribution both puts equipment at risk and inflates the bill.
What we work on
- Hot aisle / cold aisle separation and bypass leakage
- CRAC / CRAH placement and under-floor plenum flow
- Rack-level temperature distribution and hot spot detection
- Free cooling potential
- Indoor air quality, comfort and smoke propagation
- Cleanroom airflow and particle transport
Why CFD
Moving one rack, adding a blanking panel or changing a fan speed can rearrange the whole flow field. Finding that out by trial is expensive and risky; trying it in the model is cheap.
Technical notes for this field
- Where does cooling actually fail: data centre or enclosure?
- The operating point belongs to the system, not the fan
- Why air change rate is not enough for a cleanroom
- Indoor comfort: temperature alone is not enough
- The hardest particle for a filter is not the smallest one
- Heat pump outdoor units: breathing your own exhaust
